The Chronological List of Paintings of Frederick Taylor

Some 40 years ago, advancing in age, and suffering from both arthritis and a most painful hip, one that was in need of surgery, Fred recognized that his Montreal storage facility located near Dorval airport was increasingly inconvenient. In Montreal from San Miguel, Fred stayed at the University Club of Montreal and later at an apartment hotel on Crescent Street, between De Maisonneuve and Ste Catherine streets. Somewhat miserly, Fred had habitually taken 3 buses to get to the storage facility. Fred asked Alan Klinkhoff if perhaps he might see if more convenient storage could be found. Alan was living then in Montreal’s Gleneagles Apartments, a baronial looking building on Cote des Neiges and one that Fred had in fact painted in May 1947 (Frederick B. Taylor Inventory no. 946. May 1947, Gleneagles from Mt. Royal. 32 x 40 in. Oil on canvas. Acquired by Gleneagles).

  • The manager of the Gleneagles at the time, Bruce Munro, a close personal friend of Alan’s, was agreeable to leasing a storage space. Fred Taylor personally oversaw the installation of shelving and racks for his paintings. Alan rented a van and over a three day period helped relocate Fred’s works to the Gleneagles. While doing so, Alan also helped him update his inventory of what he was storing. Fred gifted Alan Klinkhoff personally a photocopy of a list of his paintings that is the foundation of our project.

Upon Fred Taylor’s passing, as concerns the artwork, his niece, Judith Mappin, located in Montreal was the trustee. She reached out to Alan at Walter Klinkhoff Gallery to advise the Estate and also to act for the Estate.
