Alan Klinkhoff, John Little: City Life from 1951 (Montreal: Alan Klinkhoff Gallery, 2017), 70-71.
Little’s neighbourhoods encourage their residents to sit on their balconies or staircases in the front of their homes, the house, a 'plex, a configuration that encourages communication and familiarity among neighbours, (and "eyes on the street" as author Jane Jacobs points out) unlike the convention in the suburbs where we convene by the barbeque in our backyards, fenced in, out of view of our neighbours.
Montreal’s spiral staircases are an adaptation to a municipal regulation at one stage to oblige a setback from the sidewalk in the construction of the building. The clever use of the staircase allowed access to a second floor without using inside space to achieve it.
