Edwin Holgate was a founding member of Montreal’s Beaver Hall Group of painters, a member of the Group of Seven, the Canadian Group of Painters, the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts, and the Montreal Pen and Pencil Club as well as an art teacher at Montreal’s Ecole des Beaux- Arts. Holgate was in the Canadian army in WWI and an Official War Artist with the Canadian Air Force in WWll. ( see the “Shipbuilding at Sorel” Holgate offered in this sale ). His strong use of colour in the fine work we are offering here is exemplary of the modernism represented by Holgate and the Beaver Hall Group.
