Montreal is famous for these “plexes” and their outdoor staircases. Their origin it sees relates to legislated setbacks of the buildings from the sidewalks. Clever architects set back the structure of the building but affixed the staircases protruding outside the building. The result maximized interior space for inhabitants on the upper floors. Much of this architectural heritage has survived.1of 14
