Jean Paul Riopelle’s Cache Canard of 1974 exemplifies his mastery with vivid colours and thick paint technique. The artwork features rhythmic layers of white, black, green, red, and blue, evoking woodland camouflage and the feel of a northern thicket. If one looks at a basic hunter’s blind, one can well imagine that it is the tangible inspiration for this fine painting. Riopelle himself was a sportsman.
Vertical palette knife strokes create a sculptural surface, with cool blues outlining the work and reds and greens animating the centre. Riopelle’s approach makes colour feel physical.
