Although untitled, it is reasonable to assume that this early autumn pastoral is of the Ottawa region, conceivably the Gatineau. Despite the small size of the painting, Brownell’s palette is rich in autumn colours, including fiery oranges, deep reds and bright yellows, under a softly clouded sky painted in pastel tones. This is a highly accomplished work.
Franklin Brownell was Ottawa’s première artist of his day. His paintings were sought after by the foremost art collectors in the region and several were acquired by Canada’s National Gallery where the director, Eric Brown was a strong supporter.
