This important work showcases Randolph Hewton’s bold, post-Impressionist palette, shaped by the influences of Matisse, the Fauves, and the Post-Impressionists, applied to a distinctly Canadian subject. Painted between 1920–1930, The Witches Wood highlights Hewton’s masterful command of colour. It also reflects his rare but significant engagement with the landscape vision of Tom Thomson, Lawren Harris, and J.E.H. MacDonald in Algoma. Through rhythmic brushwork and a striking palette, Hewton successfully brought European modernist sensibilities to the forests of Canada.
