This painting is an exquisite accomplishment in miniature of the imagery Fortin uses in many of his celebrated large compositions. How often has one seen variations and interpretations of this house and from this same perspective utilized in other oils and watercolours? And Fortin’s “charette de foin”, the hay cart with the farmer atop, is sufficiently implied here with 6 loosely applied dabs of paint against a blue background. Notice his audacious approach to painting the sky. This artist is brilliant! That the surface of the panel does appear to have a ground of blue would suggest the painting is of the late 1930s or a bit later.
