This is an outstanding painting by Rene Richard, the trapper-trader-artist appropriately described as “the Tom Thomson of the North.” The remoteness, vastness and power of the Canadian wilderness are marvellously described with Richard’s fluid expressionist technique, and one can’t help but notice the sensational lighting effects.
Eaton Canyon is located about 300 km south of Kuujjuaq and 175 km northwest of Schefferville, Quebec. The Caniapiskau River, as it is known today, flows for 737 km across the Canadian Shield. Its headwaters now empty into La Grande, one of the hydroelectric complexes of the James Bay Project.
