“Studio Window” of 1970 is an outstanding example of Henri Masson’s painting, combining his interest in still life, the human figure and Canadian landscape. It is reasonable to speculate that his wife Germaine served as the model and to offer the perspective and relationship of scale in the composition. Henri was a bold presence in person, an artist who was a passionate supporter of a Canadian form of expression in painting. He enjoyed an extensive and successful career, collected by the foremost collectors and museums of his day, including John A. McAulay, H.S. Southam, The National Gallery of Canada and the Hirshhorn Museum.
Our original family art gallery, Galerie Walter Klinkhoff, had the honour of representing Henri.
Back in Canada, he [Masson] set vigorously to work, and by the following year was able to present two important exhibitions: one at the Walter Klinkhoff Galleries and the other at the Art Emporium in Vancouver, B.C. In December 1974, the Canadian Post Office issued four stamps for Christmas. One of these was “Les Patineurs de Hull,” by Masson, the other three being works by R.C. Todd, Clarence Gagnon and Jean-Paul Lemieux. For Masson, 1975 was a preparatory year for the great exhibition of his works held on February 17, 1976 at the Walter Klinkhoff Galleries. (1)
