Private collection, MichiganBorn in Toronto, Ontario, Frances-Anne Johnston was the daughter of Francis Hans Johnston, noted Canadian artist and member of the Group of Seven. She met her husband, Franklin Arbuckle, at the Ontario College of Art, and they married in 1934. She became one of Canada's most accomplished artists in the still life genre. Johnston's still life paintings create vibrant and detailed compositions where objects play distinct roles. Her use of bold colors and familiar objects, such as a white jug adorned with black cherries, transports viewers into private, fictional worlds. Johnston's skillful use of light and shadow enhances the atmosphere of her paintings. Her work has been exhibited widely and is held in various galleries and collections, including the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Hamilton.
In 2022, The Ottawa Art Gallery (OAG) exhibition A Family Palette highlighted Johnston's work, showcasing for the first time the art of Frances-Anne Johnston, Franz Johnston, and Franklin Arbuckle together.1of 6
