Douglas Lawley was a dedicated, excellent and revered teacher . On weekends, he set out in the city to draw and paint his beloved horses, customarily finding them on Mount Royal and at McGill’s Roddick Gates. Important compositions like the one offered here, painted in the picturesque Charlevoix region of Quebec, were painted on more lengthy sketching trips at spring break. The location of these logging horses implied by the magnificent backdrop of the Charlevoix highlands leading toward Les Éboulements and Cap-aux-Oies is just above and west of Baie-St-Paul.

Maybe only in the company of Coburn, there was no other Canadian artist more interested in painting horses.
