“In my opinion, [Jackson’s] most striking works are the colourful French‑Canadian farm and village scenes of the 1920s and early 1930s. Picturesque, and painted in the Post‑Impressionist style, they are poignant reminders of the social and cultural significance of the Quebec rural communities of that time…”
Blair Laing wrote the above in his Memoirs of an Art Dealer, Volume II (1982)—where he included A. Y. Jackson as among his favourite Canadian artists and described what he considered Jackson’s greatest contribution to Canadian art.
For our part, it is our opinion that the length of Jackson’s career and diversity of subject matter, painting this country from coast to coast, cement his reputation as the quintessential Canadian landscape artist of two generations. Unrestrained by the responsibility of family, he was able to travel and paint extensively and vigorously. Because of the quantity of fine paintings by Jackson composed over a career of 60 years has maintained their affordability.
