Jacques Payette

Jacques Payette (b. 1951) is a Montreal-based self-taught artist who has enjoyed a distinguished career spanning more than fifty years. A significant figure in contemporary Quebec art, he has created a deeply personal body of work that explores intimacy, memory, and the human experience. His life partner, Sylvie Gélineau, is also an accomplished artist.

Payette's paintings are distinguished by their ability to transform familiar subjects into powerful vehicles of emotion. Uninhabited interiors, architectural elements, antique furnishings, period costumes, everyday objects, and portraits of those closest to him form a rich visual vocabulary through which he explores themes of presence and absence, remembrance and reflection. In his work, objects seem to retain the memory of those who once used them, while spaces carry the quiet traces of lives lived and moments passed.

The emotional depth of Payette's work has attracted considerable scholarly attention. In the preface to Jacques Payette, a four-volume boxed set published by the Musée d'art de Joliette in 2023, Jean-François Bélisle, then Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Musée d'art de Joliette and now Director of the National Gallery of Canada, observed that "for Jacques Payette, the human being is an exceptional vehicle of emotion." His remarks underscore the artist's enduring interest in the emotional and psychological dimensions of lived experience.

More recently, renowned art historian and former director of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, John R. Porter devoted a major two-volume publication to the artist, aptly titled Artiste de l'intime et du temps qui passe (Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, 2026). The title itself reflects a central aspect of Payette's work: an enduring fascination with memory, impermanence, contemplation, resilience, and the subtle awareness of life's transience. Porter describes Payette as “an artist of great talent whose work lies at the heart of Quebec society's rich and abundant universe.”

Through imagery imbued with poetry, mystery, and introspection, Jacques Payette has created a body of work that invites reflection on the traces left behind by people, places, and experiences. His paintings remind us that memory resides not only within individuals, but also within the objects and spaces that accompany us through life, giving enduring form to the fragile beauty of time and experience.
