Painted confidently en plein air in thick, broken brushstrokes, this oil sketch shows a rugged coastal rock arch with waves crashing energetically around its base, the sea is a vivid green-blue under a pale sky, emphasizing Robert Pilot’s impressionistic handling of light and atmosphere.
Robert Pilot was active with the Beaver Hall Group, participated as a guest in the first Group of Seven exhibition and later served as President of the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts. Robert Pilot served in the two world wars, and in 1944 was made a member of the Order of the British Empire.
