Still Life with Freesias is testament to "Claude A’s" legacy in paint, more than 40 years sharing joy and beauty with his audience. The limited number of us who enjoyed the pleasure of visiting with Huguette and Claude at Carre de Bon Acceuil in the summer, recognized immediately that images in Claude’s paintings were inspired by their family home and gardens he and Huguette lovingly cultivated.
The aesthetic beauty of Still Life with Freesias masks the credentials the artist Claude A. Simard brought to the easel; an academically and professionally trained artist and university professor of art, he was equally conversant in the language of classic art theories as he was of the modern and contemporary. Although both Simard the artist and the gardener were enthusiastic to explore, experimenting with new ideas and materials, in neither the garden nor the finished canvas was there anything casual or random in design, structure or colour.
Claude A. Simard was a friend.
