Bouchard has captured a Quebec tradition of Sunday mass at an unlocated church, one presumably adjacent to the St. Lawrence, or conceivably a lake elsewhere. The parishioners are dressed in their Sunday winter best. While the ladies and children enter the church, the men gather together outside for a last pipe before going in. The driver puts a blanket over his horse while he then waits outside during the mass.
