This is a fine landscape of Holgate’s, one most certainly painted near his Laurentian Quebec home at Morin Heights.
Edwin Holgate was one of the catalysts to Montreal's Beaver Hall group of artists and, later, the eighth member of the Group of Seven. The Boston Fine Arts Museum has an important collection of woodblock prints by Holgate. As A.J. Casson and A.Y. Jackson, fellow members of the Group of Seven whose careers included the post WWll era, Holgate continued his interest in the Canadian landscape tradition of which he was a pioneer.
