Period dress and historical references occupy an important place in Jacques Payette’s work. Here, two elaborate garments are presented almost as portraits (of anonymous sitters ?) their richly patterned fabrics and luminous reds commanding the composition. Set against a period architectural backdrop, the costumes reveal Payette’s fascination with the visual language of another era. The artist’s expressive brushwork brings a contemporary vitality and presence to these carefully observed historical forms.
