Private collection. In this painting, Fred Taylor has described a spectacle light over the Saint Lawrence River in a scene that the Charlevoix region regularly provides. In the foreground, deep in the shade, is an abandoned goélette (goélette du Saint-Laurent ), a local version of a schooner which pretty much disappeared from use almost 50 years ago now. In the distance would be the Cacouna - Kamouraska region of the south shore.
Port-au-Saumon is located in the painterly Charlevoix region of Quebec canonized by the likes of Clarence Gagnon, A.Y. Jackson, Jean Paul Lemieux, René Richard and other outstanding artists attracted by its rugged beauty. This particular port is pretty much equidistant from Saint-Fidèle and Port-au-Persil or, on a grand scale, between La Malbaie (Murray Bay) and Saint-Siméon. In 1983, Taylor was living in Mexico where he often painted local subjects in and around San Miguel de Allende. However, for his Canadian representatives at the time, such as our family gallery in Montreal, Galerie Walter Klinkhoff, and Roberts Gallery in Toronto, Fred would come to Canada and sketch primarily in Québec and down east in Nova-Scotia. Many artists painting in the Charlevoix region favoured Auberge de nos Aïeux in Les Éboulements as a base from which to set out daily.
