There She Lies is a large-scale floral painting that reflects Bobbie Burgers’ process-driven approach to gesture and material. The upper portion of the canvas is densely composed with flowers rendered in saturated reds, yellows, and whites through broad, assertive brushwork. Toward the lower section, these forms loosen and dissolve into thinner paint, drips, and blurred passages. This transition shifts the composition from more defined structure to fragmentation, emphasizing movement and change rather than stillness.
Burgers uses floral imagery as a framework for exploring emotional charge and painterly process rather than as a traditional still-life subject. Varying paint thickness and allowing chance effects to remain visible, she balances control with unpredictability, positioning the work between representation and abstraction. The physical handling of paint plays a central role, with viscosity, gravity, and layering shaping the surface alongside intentional mark-making.
