Suggesting a crispness in the autumn air, Gagnon composed a cluster of houses—simple rural dwellings with dark roofs and whitewashed walls—nestled into a hillside dancing in golds, ochres, and russets of late fall. Slender birches, their leaves turning brilliant yellow, rise through the composition and frame the scene with a vertical rhythm. Below, a lively cascade of white water tumbles over dark rocks, its cool tones offsetting the warmth of the surrounding foliage.
