signed and dated, ‘Verner / 1897’ (lower right)Provenance
Private collection, London, OntarioOne should not be surprised to discover such a fine watercolour commemorating the Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897. Although Frederick Arthur Verner is celebrated for his outstanding paintings in watercolours and in oils of Canada’s First Nations peoples and the Canadian buffalo, from around 1880 until his death in 1928 he resided in London, England. With occasional visits to Canada, it is from London that he continued to paint his legacy of the Canadian buffalo and First Nations peoples. From 1881 and for 20 years he exhibited with London’s Royal Academy and in 1905 was the first Canadian artist in the Royal British Colonial Society of Artists.3of 3
