Alan Klinkhoff Gallery, Toronto, Lawren Harris & Canadian Masters: Historic Sale Celebrating Canada's 150 Years, April 1, 2017.Native of St John and born into a prosperous middle-class family, Jack Humphrey adopted a modernist approach to both figurative and abstract work. During the 1920s, he studied under Philip Hale at the Boston Museum of Fine arts and under Charles Hawthorne at the New York National Academy of Design. He is considered the most significant eastern Canadian painter of his generation. He was a member of the Contemporary Arts Society. He traveled to Europe, Mexico and New York but upon his return to Canada, he began to focus on subject matter of his region. He was determined to succeed in his art career and his membership in national and international professional art groups were some of his means to ensure his success as a professional artist.
