Upon the death of Clarence Gagnon in 1942, his widow had a formidable legacy left by her husband of these exquisite sketches in oil, most of them painted on either a format measuring approximately 5 x 7 inches or 6 x 9 inches, few of which were either signed or identified as to where he had painted them. Gagnon had not offered these sketches for sale and kept them with a view in mind to perhaps, at a future date, revisit them and compose a larger version. The distinction might be made that, although a page in a diary one wouldn’t sign, a letter one is sending one does. These confidently executed sketches were, for Gagnon, much like a diary and therefore unsigned. When he exhibited one, offering it for sale, or gifted one to a friend then he added his signature. Mme Gagnon cleverly printed an estate label, itemized the works in an inventory, ascribing each a title as best as she could and a number corresponding to the inventory. This work has affixed to the back of the panel a certification as to its authenticity with the inventory No. 508 and signed by Lucile Rodier Gagnon.
