In this composition of Lake Rosseau, L.A.C. Panton balances structural geometry with luminous colour harmonies. Through his teaching and art, he helped bridge traditional and modernist approaches in Canadian painting. L.A.C. Panton (Lawrence Arthur Colley Panton, 1894–1954) studied at the Ontario College of Art and later in Europe before joining its faculty, where he became an influential instructor and eventually principal. His painting was based in representational landscape painting, but increasingly embraced design-based composition, conforming with the emerging modernist tendencies of the 1930s and 1940s. Panton exhibited with the Ontario Society of Artists, the Royal Canadian Academy, and was a founding member of the Canadian Group of Painters.
