André Devambez was a painter and an illustrator of children’s books. He was born in Paris in 1867 and passed away in 1944. He learned the art of engraving from a very young age, by working primarily with his father, Édouard Devambez, a famous French engraver and founder of Maison Dévambez, a fine printing business in Paris. André Devambez studied at l’École des Beaux-arts and at the private art school, l’Académie Julian and later on, in 1890, received the prestigious Prix de Rome. Devambez exhibited annually at the Société des Artistes Français, having become a member in 1899. He was also appointed Professor at l’École des Beaux-Arts, a title he occupied between 1929 and 1937.

Devambez executed numerous etchings.  Several of his paintings are in the Musée d’Orsay, in Paris. His work also extends to children's books, which he both wrote and illustrated.
