Galerie Alan Klinkhoff - advising art collectors for over 50 years

After our first family vacation to La Malbaie - Murray Bay almost 50 years ago the lure of its magnificence obliged our return for many summers to come. Friends with whom we are still in touch from those years remember accurately Dad as either winner or runner-up in the tennis tournaments held at the Manoir Richelieu and at the Murray Bay Golf Club. It was in La Malbaie that Dad first became familiar with René Richard's paintings, leading to a professional relationship between them. Many of our friends, who unlike us owned homes in the Charlevoix area, had paintings on their walls by Yvonne Bolduc, Blanche Bolduc, Edith Bouchard, Marie-Cécile Bouchard, S. Mary Bouchard, and Robert Cauchon many of whom today would be referred to as ‘’les peintres naïf de Charlevoix’’.

Whereas we have always had respect for these artists they have never been a particular specialty of our gallery. Recent discussions and conversations with others both from the museum curatorial perspective and that of the private collector we became more convinced of the significance of these artists as artists representative of a time and in a certain place, maybe indicative of a socio-economic window of a region, its inhabitants and visitors. Our focus primarily with Blanche Bolduc is not intended to position her as the best or the leader of 'les peintres naïf' but she certainly serves as an excellent study of these artists, their motivation, inspiration and the market they cultivated.

The text, well researched and excellently penned, is provided by Serge Gauthier, Ph.D., Historian and ethnologist, and President of the Charlevoix Historical Society. His analysis and subsequent conclusions are very much a revelation to us, certainly not what we would have anticipated six months ago when we embarked on this project. It is important to acknowledge the participation of Dr. Jean-Luc Dupuis, celebrated family medicine practitioner at L’Hôpital de La Malbaie and also founder of the Musée de Charlevoix. For those of you who will have had the pleasure of working with Dr. Dupuis in any capacity you will know that his enthusiasm is infectious and that he motivates people to get things done properly and efficiently. Noteworthy also is the support of Annie Breton, Directrice générale of the Musée de Charlevoix. Finally, of course, we are especially grateful to the various lenders of works of art who have made this exhibition possible.
