Léon Bellefleur Biography

Leon Bellefleur was born in Montreal on February 8th, 1910. In 1926 he enrolled himself at the Ecole Normale Jacques-Cartier and obtained, three years later, his diploma in pedagogy. This permitted him to be hired for twenty-five years as a teacher by the Catholic School Commission of Montreal. From 1929 to 1938 he attended evening drawing classes at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, in Montreal.

As of 1954 he frequently went for long periods of time to Europe, especially to Provence and Paris. Heavily affected by surrealism since he became friendly with Pellan and Giguère, he met with Breton several times. He studied etching with Friedlander and lithography at the Desjobert Studio. The quebecois poets - from the Hexagone generation to the Editions du Noirot generation - have often asked him images to accompany their poems.
